WHY ART THERAPY ?

Children cannot access learning or have good enough relationships with adults or with their peer groups if they have experienced traumatic events such as separation, bereavement and Covid-19.

Anxiety is very common with children and adults in these di
fficult times but that doesn’t mean that we have to be stuck with these anxieties.

Research has proven that art therapy has a positive effect on children in school settings in alleviating and preventing emotional difficulties.

WHO WILL BENEFIT FROM ART THERAPY ?

Children with oppositional defiant disorder.

Children with separation anxiety disorder.

Children with learning difficulties.

Children with autism, attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder(ADHD).

Children demonstrating disruptive behaviour.

Children who might have ongoing health issues such as severe allergies or asthma.

Children with anxiety and depression.

Children who might not be noticed in the classroom

WHAT IS ART THERAPY ?

Art therapy is a form of psychotherapy that uses art media as its primary mode of communication.

The overall aim of art therapy is to enable a client to effect change and growth through the use of art materials in a safe, facilitating environment. Children and adults don’t need to be good at art to access art therapy.

Adults and children might find it difficult to express their thoughts and feelings verbally. Engaging in a creative activity in a safe, facilitated environment may enable clients to access their unconscious feelings.

According to the World Health Organisation (2014), giving children the opportunity to participate in arts is closely linked to quality of life improvements and the development of skills and strategies transferable to other areas of their lives.

WHAT DOES IT LOOK LIKE AND HOW MUCH DOES IT COST ?

Art therapy sessions will take place in your school in a space which will be available to the session every week at the same times for individual sessions.

Storage space for the art work and art materials is needed.

If it is classroom art therapy this can be teachers PPA time.

Group Sessions will be run by an art therapist and a co-facilitator.

Therapy sessions are confidential with the exception of CP disclosures.

There will be an assessment at the beginning and end of the session.

You will receive a report at the end of the sessions with further recommendations.

COST

This will depends on whether group or individual therapy is required.
The cost will include supervision, assessment and the report.
If you wish me to supply the materials this will also be factored into the cost.
If you are interested please get in touch. We will decide together what is best for your students and your staff.

We can discuss it all in a zoom meeting which I can set up.

TESTIMONIES

Our school is lucky enough to benefit from an excellent art teacher and art therapist.

Through art lessons, Berrin builds children's confidence, self-belief, growth mindset andcreativity. Some children talk about how they now feel like an artist, even though they usedto think they weren't very good at art. They learn to celebrate their talents as well as theirbravery to have a go and their resilience to not give up.

Berrin also works 1:1 with childrenfor art therapy sessions. It is clear that, over time, these sessions have impact. We have seen children grow in their happiness, emotional strength, self-worth and general wellbeing,as well as their social skills, friendships and academic achievement. They are better able to tackle problems and manage their own anxiety and negative emotions.

They absolutely love their sessions with Berrin and, when they come to an end, it is a sad but also extremely proud time.

Annabelle Kapoor

Head of School

Drayton Park Primary School

Berrin in her role as art therapist has been an invaluable member of the Inclusion team. Her support and advice to parents in a range of situations has been worthwhile. Many students have benefitted from her 1:1 counselling sessions, helping children to resolve internal problems.

She has assisted in calming worried pupils with concerns from home and life among them divorce, separations, access situations, autism, grief and violence. She is able to guide children lacking social skills, behaviour problems and is able to discuss and work through boundaries so they can reflect upon their needs.

Berrin steers the children and families to a happier more content way of approaching living.

She has a gentle and empathetic manner and in her work, she is able to call upon her wide knowledge and skills.

Berrin is reflective in her practise and is to be recommended.
